Copying existing tattoos? This is the situation with tattoo copyrights
What's that?
The term "copycats" has become widely established in the tattoo industry. Anyone who deals with tattoos a lot has certainly heard of it. But what is meant by it? Meant is the 1:1 copying of tattoo templates that a tattoo artist has designed. The term is very negative and should make people not to do this. In tattooing there is no copyright and in many studios it is quite normal that a customer comes in with an already engraved motif and wants to have exactly the same.
Why is this a problem?
When you go to the tattoo artist with an idea and have thought a lot about it. And the tattoo artist then thinks again, how exactly he wants to implement it and draws a draft. And maybe changes it again to create a really special motif, which is tailored to the one customer, then there is a lot of work in it. And sometimes a lot of personal stuff. When you've put so much thought into getting a unique motif, it's a great shame for the tattoo wearer to find their motif on someone else's skin on the internet. But also the tattoo artist will be annoyed, because he put a lot of time and work into the motif. ________________________________________
Inspiration vs. Copy
What is absolutely allowed and even recommended is of course the gathering of inspiration. If one has decided on a style and then selects a beautiful motif and wants to wear a modified form of it on the skin, the tattoo artist should feel honored. It is only difficult when a specially designed motif is suddenly stung somewhere else exactly the same.
Take non-existing motifs?
It's not like that, of course. A Disney character designed in the style of Disney Comics is of course not a problem. This was not designed by the tattoo artist and is therefore not a copy of another tattoo artist. And also some motifs, for example, in the old school style, have been repeated so often that no tattoo artist can feel stepped on the nose, if it is stung again.
Conclusion
So if you are inspired and found a really nice motif, you should think again whether changes to the motif do not make the whole thing a little more personal and special. Every tattoo artist is ready to create a template, adapt or even draw yourself. Therefore, you should not be shy to ask for it.
