A style that is more than filigree work
They look very fine, are precisely engraved and celebrate their comeback today: the Fineline tattoos. However, the style can do more than just filigree lettering and motifs in mini format. A whole Fineline work of art can also be created over large areas.
Origin
The origin of Fineline tattoos can be found in the subculture of prison and gang tattoos. Originating in the USA already in the 80s, the style became popular in Germany in the 90s. Freddy Negrette and Jack Rudy are considered the pioneers in this field. The style was perfected, is now professionally stung and is especially popular with women. The tattoos are considered the antithesis of traditional styles, such as Traditional.
Characteristics
Fineline tattoos are most often seen as small and free-standing motifs. Larger projects, however, are also often stung in connection with a background. So you have many possibilities, even at a later date, to expand your tattoo. Fineline tattoos are often combined with Black & Grey (Link) and Realistic (Link) or Dotwork (Link). Thus, the tattoos get a certain depth and the finest gray shades are possible. To make the finest structures, such as hair or fur, look lifelike, very detailed shading is used. Together with a discreet and monochrome color scheme, the tattoos look extremely elegant and delicate on your skin. However, this is also the reason why Fineline tattoos are not without controversy regarding their durability. Therefore, a certain minimum should be a must for your tattoo.
What you can do
To at least prolong the life of your tattoo, there are a few tips you can follow. First of all, take the advice of your tattoo artist regarding the size of your motif and the body part in question. Tattoos on feet and especially on fingers are unfortunately often not of long duration. After getting your tattoo, you should give your skin enough time to heal. If it starts to itch, do not scratch your tattoo (especially if it is crusty!). Instead, take sufficient care as recommended by your tattoo artist, even if it takes a few weeks. After the healing process is over, make sure you wear sunscreen, because even though your skin has healed, it is still more sensitive to UV rays than non-tattooed skin. Also, accept the offer of re-stinging, so that the joy of your tattoo can last! In some cases, a re-piercing is even free of charge.
Excursus: the fine technique
The fineline tattoo style rather describes the technique of tattooing, which is determined by needle sizes and outlines. Classically, the tattoos are stung with 3 or 5 roundliners. This means that the needles have 3 or 5 needle heads respectively. Some tattoo artists also like to use the "single-needle" technique, the finest needle size. Thus, very fine lines and detailed tattoos are possible. The possibilities of shades are limited only by the background of the skin. Here, special attention must be paid to the correct depth of the stitches, because otherwise colors could "run out". With the so-called "blowout", for example, letter spaces can run into each other in fine letterings. Consequently, Fineline tattoos are very demanding for the tattoo artist, and bring a much higher time expenditure with them. Since the smallest mistakes are immediately noticeable and great craftsmanship is needed, turn only to a professional in the field of Fineline. In contrast to other tattoo styles Fineline is more skin-friendly, because simply fewer needle heads penetrate the skin. For clients, this means less pain, the skin bleeds less during the stinging process, and crusting during the healing process is rare. Also, compared to colored tattoos, where it takes much longer and deeper into the skin, the skin processes Fineline tattoos faster and generally takes less time to heal.
Conclusion
Especially in a society where tattoos are becoming more and more accepted and socially acceptable, fineline tattoos make excellent first tattoos. Nevertheless, they are usually easy to hide if they are not to be seen. Personally, I can't wait for the next Fineline tattoo to land under my skin. Because with the right technique and care, these can still shine in decades.
