Back to the roots!
You already have so many tattoos or you just want to try something new? Then maybe Hand Poked Tattoos could be just the thing for you.
Because what connects pharaohs, the Maori or Rihanna are these hand poked tattoos. Plus, with Hand Poked Tattoos, also known as "Stick and Poke", you're absolutely on trend today. Likewise, the hand poking artists sprout from the ground, but here absolute caution is advised when choosing.
Practiced about seven thousand years ago, hand poked tattoos are proving to be probably the oldest tattoo technique in existence. Back then practiced by the Maori, the hand-poked tattoos are currently more popular than ever. According to the motto "Back to the roots" nothing has changed in the method until today. However, today no pointed bones, teeth or spines of plants are used, as with the indigenous primitive peoples, who mainly shaped the styles Tribal (Link) and Blackwork (Link).
The technology
Just as in the past, Hand Poked Tattoos are created point by point, since a tattoo machine is completely dispensed with. The tool is limited to a needle that is attached to a handle, usually a piece of wood such as a wooden mouth spatula. The needle is inserted much slower into the skin, which is why the pulling out is also noticeable. For comparison, a tattoo machine stabs 70 to 150 times per second. Thus, the time required is much higher and even small motifs can take several hours. The needle is dipped in tattoo ink and punctured into the skin, so that lines are created from dots. However, Hand Poked Tattoos are not as opaque as machine stung. Therefore, the first layer of dots is usually not enough to sting a sufficiently dark line. Thus, the artist often has to stitch the contours several times to fill in the lines completely. In addition, the choice of tattoo ink provides wide-ranging differences. Basically, thick tattoo colors are best suited for this technique of tattooing.
Features
Small, free-standing motifs with simple outlines are most often stung with this technique. The look of the Hand Poked Tattoos is unique. They look natural, organic and filigree. A connoisseur can see the difference to machine engraved tattoos at first sight. The Hand Poked Tattoos are generally suitable for every skin type and it can be stung in any color. However, pure black is preferred because of the simplicity. Two-dimensional tattoos are possible, but rare. Colored tattoos are not stung because of the effort. In addition, the Custom Designed Tattoos make way for the "Flashes", i.e. prefabricated motifs that the tattoo artist himself would like to sting. As a cover-up, stick and poke tattoos are possible but extremely rare. As with all tattoos, you should research extensively when looking for the right tattoo artist and find someone who knows what they are doing. Your top criteria here should also be hygiene.
Less pain?
Wondering which type of tattoo is more painful? The hand poked or machine-poked tattoos? Unfortunately, this can not be said in general, because it depends mainly on the selected body part and your personal pain sensation. Since the stitches alone are stung differently, differences can already appear here, whether you feel them more or less. Nevertheless, Hand Poked Tattoos are predominantly considered to be less painful because only one needle head penetrates the skin. Generally, though, the usually sensation of burning is limited and is usually only felt when the needle is actually in the skin. So even shading is considered to be gentler on the skin. This all contributes to your skin healing faster with this technique as well.
Der selbstgemachte Beigeschmack
Due to the increased popularity of tattoo machines Hand Poked Tattoos were often labeled as homemade and associated with them a lower quality. The "homemade" character they have, because they are actually often stung by amateurs or you tattoo yourself with this method sometimes. After all, the material expenditure is limited and the idea seems tempting. Nevertheless, the probability for a skin infection remains higher if you get a tattoo at home than if you visit a professional studio. However, the professionals prove that very precise work is possible with Hand Poking and that very detailed tattoos can be stung. Especially because hand poked tattoos usually fade faster, you should take the advice of your tattoo artist and care for your tattoo sufficiently after the stinging.
And now what?
Caught up in not knowing if the materials are sterile, and the fact that hand poking is often done by amateurs, you have to decide for yourself if it's worth it for your skin. Rather, find an experienced hand poking artist, and you'll be on the safe side. Finally, hand poked tattoos are also cheaper compared to others. With hand poking, you can create your own works of art that fully expresses the tattoo artist's individual signature. Although the sessions are quieter and quieter, because no noise from a machine, for me personally the sound of a professional tattoo machine simply belongs.
For the sake of your skin.
If you are now highly motivated and want to rebel against the conventions, please don't! Even if there are numerous "do it yourself" instructions, videos and kits on the internet, please keep your hands off cheap tattoo kits and spontaneous self-attempts. For the sake of your skin.
