Some find them beautiful, others find them terrible. Even though tattoos are now completely integrated into society, this topic still triggers discussions and often ends in a generational conflict. Guided by prejudices, people form their opinions. So it was unfortunately always and so it will probably always remain. Thus, tattooed are equal to former convicts and because of this not exactly respected in society.
But how exactly does this conflict come about?
Just under 40 years ago, tattoos were still characteristics of prisoners, sailors and motorcycle enthusiasts. For the "common" citizen they were considered criminal and signaled this with the help of tattoos that were visible on the skin. Associations arose and became anchored within society. Even the dark chapter of the Second World War did not help to improve the image of tattoos. Prisoners were tattooed with serial numbers and sadly marked them for life. Religion or faith is often the source of conflict, including tattoos.
Christian scriptures refer to tattoos as "corrosive scripture" and are still ostracized by some. They were considered a disgrace and symbolized unbelievers, as well as Satan's influence. However, not every faith is against tattoos. Some religions, such as those of African tribes revere the beautiful drawings and scarring. They help distinguish tribes and mark membership in a particular group.
The turn
Even if you still have to face many prejudiced questions, such as: "Can you even get a job with it?", so they are now simply part of it. Through the Internet and the associated social media, the eternal works of art are attracting more and more attention and are a great opportunity for tattoo artists to present their works internationally, which leads to the tattoos are gaining more and more popularity.
This is also due to the wild seventies and rocking eighties, which still influence a whole group of people today. This age was characterized by the urge for individuality and change. It was only when the trend came to Germany from America that it became more and more respected here as well. In America, it was already popular in the 50s and was considered socially established at that time, now Germany was to experience the same tattoo turn. And this has really done well. Germany is now one of the most tattooed countries and even as a doctor you can be tattooed to the teeth without worrying. Usually employers don't mind a tattoo if they don't even wear them themselves. Even in areas with direct customer contact they are now mostly allowed, but often to be covered up. So you should talk to your superiors before getting a tattoo, but we think that even such regulations will loosen up in the future, as the eternal art is gaining more and more popularity and the prejudices are slowly but surely being eclipsed.
Of course, there will always be prejudice towards a person and possibly towards tattoos. Disagreements will also always remain a part of society. However, this is perfectly normal, it would be boring if everyone had the same opinion, right?
Don't let things like that stop you from getting a beautiful tattoo that you have so much in common with. After all, you are you and even prejudices can't take that away from you.
